              February 28, 2006 -Fernandez

    1. ACTION Awaiting CVs - Urquidi and Birx and De Antonio.
    2. Comments from Nakotte-

"1)       While I did like Paul’s suggestion to name each educational objective (and I did do so for our EP objectives), I abstained from naming the university and college objectives. I suspect those objectives will have to be named by the Engineering departments in their self-study documents, and because of consistency, we should simply adopt their suggestions.

      2)       Paul did not like the font in diagram 2.1, and he also suggested that the diagrams should be larger. At this stage, I chose to postpone such purely cosmetic corrections.

      3)       Gary pointed out that we will need to somehow document an ongoing evaluation and the level of achievement of the objectives, as well as evidence how the results were used to improve the effectiveness of the program. I’m not really sure how to do that, and I hope that the advisory board will provide some insight."

      Subject: upcoming NMSU EPAB meeting

      Dear Engineering Physics Board members,
    5. I have put some information about the upcoming Engineering Physics Advisory Board meeting (March 9-10) on the Web at http://top.nmsu.edu/BSEP/
You will find the list of Board members, Agenda, and travel information. Next week we will be adding links to our draft ABET Self-Study Report and other information.
There is additional information about the BSEP program on our department web page http://physics.nmsu.edu/Physics/ep/index.html
I you need assistance making travel arrangements please feel free to contact Ms. Josie Alexander (505-646-3832) or me. We can reimburse travel costs, if necessary.
The university has gone to a new online parking pass system. You can get a parking pass at the site http://www.nmsupolice.com/permit/parking.asp The "Campus Location" is Gardiner Hall. If you have problems, we can also generate the pass when you arrive.
The meeting will start on Thursday March 9 at 12:00pm with lunch at the Mix (1001 E University Ave (505) 532-2042 - in a shopping center next to Kinkos). We will walk there from the Physics Department office at 11:45am or you can meet us at the restaurant. The reservation is in my name and the Physics Department.
But please feel free to arrive anytime Thursday morning for informal visit.
The Engineering Physics program, along with most programs in the NMSU Engineering College, will be reviewed for accreditation by ABET in October 2006. A department Committee with members from Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering is currently preparing a so-called Self-Study Report which describes our program, including elaborate curriculum and outcomes assessment processes. The Advisory Board has an important role representing our program constituents and sharing your experience and wisdom to ensure our program produces graduates with the desired skills. Much of this meeting will be spent discussing our draft Report.
I expect that the Report will be a work in progress up to the due date in June 2006. We have a fairly complete zeroth draft, and we plan to have a first draft on the web late next week. When it is ready I will send an email to the Board in case you have a chance to look at it before the meeting. I will provide the latest hardcopy at the meeting.
Thanks again for your willingness to serve on our Board.
      Gary "

Answer to questions posed at meetings

            Q. What do you mean by "allied programs"? In our case would this be our partners in EE and ME, or does it mean programs not associated with ours such as CS?

            A. (Jim McnEil)
By "allied programs" we are referring to the EE, ME, and Materials Eng. programs with whom we have joint 5-year programs. Since the BS Eng. Phys. graduates in these programs are admitted in these graduate engineering programs, our curriculum must meet their needs.  We measure how well we do this by success rates in these programs and by feedback from the faculty in these programs. Specifically, an engineering faculty member has been assigned as our contact person with primary responsibility for coordinating these 5-year programs.  He provides us direct feedback every semester and participates in our student advising sessions each semester. We haven't been religious about documenting this feedback which is a weakness we need to address.

            Q. How do you include the Constituencies in the assessment process. One way is through the Advisory Board. Do you do anything else?  Also do you represent every constituency, or just each numbered category (your 1-6 on pg. 25)  i,e, for # 1 do you have parents, students and taxpayers each represented, or just some of those 3 (easiest is students).

            A. (Jim McnEil)
We claim that the taxpayer and parental interests, or more broadly, Colorado citizen interests, are represented through the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (state oversight agency) and our Board of Trustees (appointed by the governor).  We have a BOT member on our visiting committee. Admittedly, the "parent" assessment component of this is weak. We will likely revisit whether we want to continue to include parents among our constituents.
